Our story: Support the "whole child" In Haiti

In 2019, during a mission trip with high school youth from Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, I served as the trip’s photographer. Through the camera lens, I observed a stark reality: for every child attending school, many others were not. As a teacher, this disparity troubled me deeply. I believe that education provides hope, opportunity, and direction for a child.

One day, while walking up a hill, I met the principal of the Centre D’Etude Lumiere in Mariani. Our conversation revealed the immense challenges faced in educating Haiti’s children. This encounter was transformative; I felt a profound calling to support this vibrant community.

With the support of many compassionate individuals, a team of 19 volunteers joined me on a return trip to Haiti. We brought school supplies, taught in classrooms, collaborated with staff, and assessed the potential for a lasting partnership. Four members extended their stay to engage in deeper discussions with the school’s administration. We departed with a firm belief in the dedication and compassion of the school’s staff.

This journey led to the formation of Haiti Scholars, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to provide educational assistance to students aged 3-11 at the Centre D’Etudes Lumiere. We offer scholarships to the most disadvantaged children and collaborate with teachers and staff to nurture the “whole child”. This includes delivering quality education, emotional support, and proper nutrition. In a region occasionally affected by civil unrest, we are committed to discreetly providing humanitarian aide, such as food, water, medical supplies, and other essentials to students and their families during times of need. We believe that education fosters hope, self-esteem, and empowerment, paving the way for a brighter future. Your support can make a profound difference in the lives of these children.
